CARLSBAD ADU - IN COLLABORATION WITH MODERN GRANNY FLAT
A space uniquely designed for two families. The clients were in search of solutions to have all parents live within the property and potentially have the space connected via living spaces. The roof highlights all the spaces and shapes the interior with asymmetrical, and individual ceilings to create two warm and comfortable living spaces. The roof also projects as a cantilever taking advantage of the site sloped topography, creating a fantastic view of the local mountain and providing shade. In the interior, the kitchen cabinets harmonize with the wood slats ceiling and create extra storage space.
The plan locates the “wet rooms,” such as the kitchens and restrooms, in the middle. So we can minimize costs to the client. The mechanical units are above these areas for more sustainable distribution, with registers through the kitchen cabinets. Water from the ADU’s showers and washer is recycled in the crawl space to water the garden.
